The extent of the untested rape kit backlog in Rhode Island is unknown. Rhode Island law does not require law enforcement agencies to count, track, or test rape kits.

In 2015, The Accountability Project issued an open records request to bring the number of untested kits at the Rhode Island State Crime Lab (RISCL) to light. In 2016, through our request we learned that RISCL analyzes rape kits within 60 days and at the time of our request had six cases awaiting testing.
