The Backlog:

Atlanta

Atlanta is one of the cities where we are using public records requests to uncover the number of untested rape kits in police storage as part of The Accountability Project. We have not yet received complete data from Atlanta. Please continue to check this page for the most up-to-date information.

According to a CBS 46 investigation, over 2,000 untested rape kits were found in the Atlanta metro area. Athens-Clarke County Police Department (ACCPD) found 159 untested kits dating back to 1993, Cobb County Police Department (CCPD) found 365 untested kits dating back to the '70s, and Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital rape crisis center identified 1,490 untested kits. According to ACCPD and CCPD, they have implemented policies to prevent a backlog from occuring in the future.
